Fifth Grade Lessons

Fall Unit-Art Elements

Week 1-Welcome/unit overview/first art class drawing

The first week we go over procedures and safety in the art classroom. View the video below through the link.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmGFxAqqF_Q

The first activity is to view the following video below about the art elements. This is the large unit that we go through each fall semester. Each art lesson will be focused on one of the art elements.

The hands on activity is a free draw that is timed. This helps me see the drawing developmental level the student is on and some insight on their attention span. A simple template is provided below, but you can use a piece of paper. Give the student a pencil and some crayons. They can draw whatever they like and color it. They only need to draw and color for the time allotted. It seems simple but most students try to stop before the time is complete. Below are the times for each of the grades. You do not turn in this drawing.

Week 2-Contour-What is outer contour line?

The students learn what is a contour line. The goal is observation of line in real life. The students do an activity outlining the outer contour on shapes on a large paper. The students draw the outer contour of an object from around the house. Snap a picture of the final drawing and email or Dojo message me.

Week 3-What is Blind and Modified Contour?

The student will continue their observation of line through two activities, blind and modified contour, based from the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. A blind contour is where the artist is drawing the contour lines of an object but they did not look at their paper. These are timed drawings. A modified contour drawing is where the artist is allowed to glance at the paper, but should spend most of the time looking at the object in which they are drawing. The students will draw their hands using these techniques.

Studio-Modified Contour of Hand Video: This drawing will take 20 minutes if they are doing the process correctly. If finished before that time, look for more contours and details. Also, look for the way the light hits the hand. You can add shadows and shading to your hand.

Week 4-Mood head, how is mood shown in art? Integration: Language Arts

During this week the students will examine how mood is seen in art works. Through the use of color and expression artists get the mood of their works across, much like a poet through the use of words in a poem. They will create a mood head using cut paper.

Week 11-Applying Color Theory

In this two class period lesson, the student create a painting of an orange fruit. Class one of the assignment the students draw from observation an orange half and begin painting their work. The students are required that each segment of the inside of the orange be a different mixed color. The students also learn more variations of color through tint, shade and tone.

Week 15 and 16-Fantasy Molecules

The students will start their three-dimensional work with a collaborative project. The students will examine how molecules are depicted. They will also examine the work of Tara Donovan, a sculptor from New York. In small groups the students will use toothpicks and Styrofoam balls to create a molecule. Day 2 of the lesson, the students will paint their groups work a color and also arrange their project with asymmetrical balance. Once complete, I combine all of the works into one giant class molecule.
