Fall Unit-Art Elements
Week 1-Welcome/unit overview/first art class drawing

The first activity is to view the following video below about the art elements. This is the large unit that we go through each fall semester. Each art lesson will be focused on one of the art elements.
The hands on activity is a free draw that is timed. This helps me see the drawing developmental level the student is on and some insight on their attention span. A simple template is provided below, but you can use a piece of paper. Give the student a pencil and some crayons. They can draw whatever they like and color it. They only need to draw and color for the time allotted. It seems simple but most students try to stop before the time is complete. Below are the times for each of the grades. You do not turn in this drawing.
K-1-10 minutes

Week 2-Observation of Line-How do we observe line? Integration: Science
The students will review line types. Based on the book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards, the students will do two drawing activities that will help with their observation skills. The final activity is called monster twin. Snap a picture of the final drawing and email or Dojo message me.

Week 3-Upside Down. How do we see without symbols?
The students do one more activity from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. They do a copy draw but the image is turned upside down. This helps the students see the lines in the image and improve their observation skills.
First, print the follow image before the intro. video. If you can't print it, open the file in a separate window. This will allow you to see the image and watch the video at the same time.

Week 4-Shape Houses: Integration: Geometry
The students create a construction paper house using geometric and organic shapes. For reference they look at historical architecture from North Carolina.

This site you can search for various homes and buildings across the state. Look at their style. What qualities are there. Are their columns? What are the windows like? What does the door look like? Look at the landscaping.

Week 5 What is Space? Foreground, Middle Ground, Background
The students review horizon line and examine that images have a foreground, middle ground, and background. They also examine how size of objects in the image vary based on there location. The students create a mountain scene that has fore, middle, and background.

Week 6-Different ways of showing value
We will review value. We will learn there are four different ways to shade in drawing. We will do an activity sheet to learn hatching, cross hatching, blending, and stippling.

Week 8-Form Drawing-Integration Math
In this culminating drawing the students will do a final drawing of a geometric form using on of the four different ways of drawing value in their drawing. This activity uses all of the skills taught up to this point in the course.

Week 9-Visual/Drawn Texture
The students will complete an activity sheet dealing with drawn texture. They will learn that visual texture can be created by lines, shapes, and dots. The students will do a copy draw of the texture sheet in the link below.

Week 10- Color Wheel
The students will complete an entire color wheel.

Week 11-Applying Color Theory
In this two class period lesson, the student create a painting of an orange fruit. Class one of the assignment the students draw from observation an orange half and begin painting their work. The students are required that each segment of the inside of the orange be a different mixed color. The students also learn more variations of color through tint, shade and tone.

Week 12 and 13-Watercolor Winter-Integration Weather
The students develop their own winter scenes. We discuss what things do we see in winter to include in their images. The first day the students draw out their image. Second day the students learn basic watercolor techniques and paint their image using cool colors.

Week 14-Four Point Snowflakes-Integration Math
The students will create paper snowflakes by folding and cutting. They review symmetrical balance.

Week 15 and 16-Felted Geode (Grant funded by Wilkes Hall of Fame)
The students will learn the history, process, and importance of wool in the development of our region. They will wet felt wool to create a felted geode.

Week 17-Clay Intro.
In this class the students will be introduced to natural clay. They learn clay is a natural material that has been used to create utilitarian and art pottery for 1000's of years. They will look at some work from my personal collection. They will go over the procedures for handling clay including kneading/wedging and hand washing. This will prepare the students for the main project.

Week 18-Pinch Pot Creature
The students will create a pinch pot and create a face on it. They will learn a brief history of the face jug, a traditional North Carolina pottery form.

Week 21-Painting/Glazing, Bone Dry, and Kiln Firing
During this class, the students will paint their pottery projects. We will discuss different ways to add color to and protect pottery. We will also discuss what bone dry is and looks like. The students will then watch a time lapse of pottery being created from start to finish. When the students have completed their projects, they will turn them back in to be sealed. They will be able to take their projects home next week.
