The first activity is to view the following video below about the art elements. This is the large unit that we go through each fall semester. Each art lesson will be focused on one of the art elements.
The hands on activity is a free draw that is timed. This helps me see the drawing developmental level the student is on and some insight on their attention span. A simple template is provided below, but you can use a piece of paper. Give the student a pencil and some crayons. They can draw whatever they like and color it. They only need to draw and color for the time allotted. It seems simple but most students try to stop before the time is complete. Below are the times for each of the grades. You do not need to turn in this drawing.
Week 2-Line, reviewing line types and what is line quality?
The students create an image using their hands that shows various line types and line qualities. The students review line types. The students learn that the same line can be varied by changing the line quality, by making the line thick, thin, dotted, dark, etc. Snap a picture of the final drawing and email or Dojo message me.

Week 4-Horizon Line-Big/Little
The students learn that space in art is not outer space but how an artist using the area of the image. The review lesson focuses on the use of horizon line. The students create an image using cut paper that is a mountain scene with a horizon line. The students learn through examining the work of Andrew Wyeth that an artist can create depth in an image by manipulating the size of the objects in the image and their placement. If things are drawn larger and are in the foreground they appear closer to the viewer. Things drawn smaller appear further away. They draw a forest using this concept .

Week 5 What is value? Value Pumpkin
The students learn to view value on an object from real life. They review value scale, then they look for the light and dark shadows on a pumpkin. They complete an activity sheet using colored pencils.
The students will used the concept of value learned with our pumpkins to shade a circle to become a sphere. A pdf instruction sheet is below and a student example.
The students will review texture. They learn there are two types in art actual and visual. Actual texture is felt by touch and is mostly used in sculpture. Visual texture is the illusion of texture. It is primarily in 2-dimensional works. Ways of creating visual texture is using lines, lines, shapes and dots. The students will do rubbings from texture sheets and then they will draw what they see in the rubbing, looking for the lines, shapes, and dots.
The students review the origin of color which is reflected light and create a drawing called Willie MacGurkle
First watch the video below
Watch the video going over the origin of color.
Read through the poem and create a Willie MacGurkle
Willie MacGurkle
Did you ever hear of Willie MacGurkle, Who limped around town with his nose painted purple? He was the ugliest man I have ever seen, One eye orange, the other one green. Yellow hair hung down like straw on his head, He was dressed all in brown with patches of red. Out of his beat up shoes his poor toes stuck through, In very cold weather his toes turned blue. One day in the rain neath an umbrella of black Willie left town and he never came back.

Week 10-Color Wheel
The students will complete a color wheel with primary, secondary, neutral. They will also include a couple of tertiary colors
Studio Demo Video
Color Wheel print out. If you do not have paints to complete the assignment, color with crayons.
The students will create a color wheel pizza. In this assignment they will be reviewing the primary, secondary, and neutral colors. They will also learn about tint, shades, and tones to create their pizza and toppings.
Part 1 of Assignment-The Pizza
The students will use a square sheet of paper. They will draw a circle that touches each corner of the sheet. Then they will draw a smaller circle just inside the prior circle to represent the crust. Inside the circle the students need to draw three lines. This will give them six slices that will be painted.
The students will then mix paint to complete each slice. The slices must include the three primary colors and the three secondary colors. The crust will be painted brown.

Week 15 and 16-Radial Snowflakes-Integration Math/Science
The students will create a snowflake using coffee filters. In this two lesson assignment, the students will learn about wax resist and watercolor review. In lesson two the students will cut their coffee filter into a 6 point snowflake.
The students learn about the legend of worry people. They examine real ones that are passed around. They also learn the location of Guatemala. On day one the students create a tin foil doll. On day 2, the students will dress the doll using yarn.
