Fall Unit-Art Elements
Week 1-Welcome/unit overview/first art class drawing
The first week we go over procedures and safety in the art classroom. View the video below through the link.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmGFxAqqF_Q
The first activity is to view the following video below about the art elements. This is the large unit that we go through each fall semester. Each art lesson will be focused on one of the art elements.
The hands on activity is a free draw that is timed. This helps me see the drawing developmental level the student is on and some insight on their attention span. A simple template is provided below, but you can use a piece of paper. Give the student a pencil and some crayons. They can draw whatever they like and color it. They only need to draw and color for the time allotted. It seems simple but most students try to stop before the time is complete. Below are the times for each of the grades. You do not turn in this drawing.

Week 3-Shape Creatures- What are geometric and organic shapes? Integration Math
The students will create a shape creature using scrap cut paper. They learn there are two groups of shapes, geometric (mathematical) and organic (free-forms). They will cut geometric shapes to create their creature's body and draw organic shapes for details.

Week 4-Space, Horizon Line-Big and Little
The students learn that space in art is not outer space but how an artist using the area of the image. The lesson focuses on the use of horizon line. The students create an image using cut paper that is a mountain scene of trees with a horizon line. The students learn through examining the work of Andrew Wyeth that an artist can create depth in an image by manipulating the size of the objects in the image. If things are drawn larger they appear closer to the viewer. Things drawn smaller appear further away. They draw a forest using this concept .

Week 6-Form-Integration Math
The students will learn the difference between a shape and a form. A shape is flat with two dimensions and a form has three dimensions. In their math classes they refer to these as 3-D Shapes. They will create both geometric and organic forms with modeling clay.

Week 8-Texture in the World
The students will review the meaning of texture in art. They will feel various texture materials and use adjectives to describe. The students will go outside and do rubbings of various textures they find in the environment.

Week 9- Color Intro.-Integration Science
The students learn that the origin of color is reflected light. Reflected light is a rainbow. We do a step by step drawing activity called Willie MacGurkle.
First watch the video below
Introduction to origin of color
Read through the poem and draw a Willie MacGurkle
Willie MacGurkle
Did you ever hear of Willie MacGurkle,
Who limped around town with his nose painted purple?
He was the ugliest man I have ever seen,
One eye orange, the other one green.
Yellow hair hung down like straw on his head,
He was dressed all in brown with patches of red.
Out of his beat up shoes his poor toes stuck through,
In very cold weather his toes turned blue.
One day in the rain neath an umbrella of black
Willie left town and he never came back.
