The first activity is to view the following video below about the art elements. This is the large unit that we go through each fall semester. Each art lesson will be focused on one of the art elements.
The hands on activity is a free draw that is timed. This helps me see the drawing developmental level the student is on and some insight on their attention span. A simple template is provided below, but you can use a piece of paper. Give the student a pencil and some crayons. They can draw whatever they like and color it. They only need to draw and color for the time allotted. It seems simple but most students try to stop before the time is complete. Below are the times for each of the grades. You do not turn in this drawing.
Week 2-Line-Are all Lines straight? Integration: Writing
This lesson introduces different types of lines. We learn that a dot moving through space creates a line. Watch the video below first from the book The Dot. Snap a picture of the final drawing and email or Dojo message me.

Finally, the following video is the studio activity with line. It is two parts. The activity sheets to print out are below the video. We observe different type lines in spaghetti and we complete an activity sheet to create a plate of spaghetti and meatballs.
Week 3- Apply Line, What is a Monogram? Integration: Writing
The students will review straight lines and different types of lines. They create a piece that is a monogram with a border. This is an integration lesson with their classroom work with letters. Snap a picture of the final drawing and email or Dojo message me.

Week 4 What are shapes? Shapes to Creatures: Integration: Math
The students identify shapes. The student will use items from around the house create a shape creature. The students trace around their creations with pencils and color them with crayons.

Week 5: We all Can't Fly, Floating Figures
The students learn that they can organize the space in their art works using horizon line. This allows the viewer to understand that there is a ground and sky. Children at this age will draw floating objects all over the page. This activity helps them to orient their images in a better way.

Week 7- Cast Shadow and Value
The students will be introduced to the concept of value. Value=Shadows. We will examine a cast shadow and create a little creature with a cast shadow.

Below is a pdf of the shadow creature cut out. The student can print out and create a monster. Then glue to a piece of dark paper to create a cast shadow.
The students will learn the difference between a shape and a form. A shape is flat with two dimensions and a form has three dimensions. In their math classes they refer to these as 3-D Shapes. They will create both geometric and organic forms with modeling clay.

Week 9-Texture
The students learn that texture is how some feels. Not an emotion, but feeling through touch. They will touch various materials and describe their texture. The activity is the "old man" and his beard. They will fill his beard with various texture materials.

The students learn that colors come from the three primary colors (red, yellow, blue) They will do a technical sheet with tempera paint called three circles.

Week 11-Color Comes from the Rainbow-Integration Science
The students learn that the origin of color is the rainbow. They will paint a rainbow mixing the secondary colors.

Week 12 and 13 Watercolor Winter
The students develop their own winter scenes. We discuss what things do we see in winter to include in their images. The first day the students draw out their image and trace with permanent marker. Part two, the students learn basic watercolor techniques and paint their image using cool colors.
The students will learn that snowflakes have symmetrical and radial balance. They will create a snowflake uses cool colors and will finish with a piece of yarn to hang.
Week 16 and 17-What is a mixture. Making sidewalk chalk-Integration Science
The student learn the difference between 2-D and 3-D artworks. In the first part of the lesson, the students will create a mixture of plaster, powder paint and water for their sidewalk chalk. In the second class, they will use their chalk to draw on the pavement outside.This will help prepare their tactical skills.
In this class the students will be introduced to natural clay. They learn clay is a natural material that has been used to create utilitarian and art pottery for 1000's of years. They will look at some work from my personal collection. They will go over the procedures for handling clay including kneading/wedging and hand washing. This will prepare the students for the main project.

Week 19-Coil Snake
The students will create a clay snake. They will learn what is a coil and the use of clay tools. This will be saved to begin the drying out process.
During this class, the students will paint their pottery projects. We will discuss different ways to add color to and protect pottery. We will also discuss what bone dry is and looks like. The students will then watch a time lapse of pottery being created from start to finish. When the students have completed their projects, they will turn them back in to be sealed. They will be able to take their projects home next week.
